NJ Department of Economic Development has awarded Verona a $1M grant, the maximum grant threshold, to be used for strategic public use development. This grant obligates the Township to utilize these funds specifically towards public use, rather than a municipal project.
Revitalizing Downtown Verona
As part of the administration's ongoing efforts to revitalize and support Verona's downtown economy and local businesses, grant funds will offset property acquisition costs for the Our Lady of the Lake Parking Lot located on Lakeside Avenue across from Verona Park. This strategic move aims to generate long-term revenue for the township while also addressing the growing need for parking in downtown Verona. Additional parking spaces on Lakeside Ave will ease the strain on the two existing municipal lots and free up spaces for both downtown businesses and Verona Park.
Parking and Infrastructure Enhancements
The proposed parking lot will offer approximately 140 metered spots, EV charging stations and offer overnight and commercial parking permits. In addition to the $1M grant received, Verona also received a $150K grant from the NJ Board of Utilities for EV infrastructure, defraying installation costs for EV charging stations.
Sustainable Energy Initiatives
Solar canopies, which will help offset the Township's energy usage, are currently being analyzed and slated to be discussed with the Mayor and Council during the 12.16.24 Township Council Meeting. Implementing solar canopies will not only reduce the township's annual energy costs but also allow the township to take advantage of other potential State credits.
Traffic Management Improvements
To safely manage the increased foot traffic, a new traffic signal is slated to be installed by Essex County. The County is currently designing a signal at the intersection of Lakeside Avenue and Pease Avenue and is aware of the Township's proposed project.
Project Timeline
The Township expects to close on this property this month. The project reconstruction bid is expected to go to bid this winter to include new payment, curbs, sidewalk, fencing, landscaping, and EV charging stations.
Community Benefits
This acquisition marks a significant advancement for Verona, benefiting residents, businesses, and visitors, and demonstrates the township's dedication to public initiatives that enhance the community with minimal financial impact.
