A Boil Water Advisory is in effect for the Township of Verona due to a Water Main Break in town this morning. Verona DPW, Police, Fire and Office of Emergency Management are actively working on the situation.
You may experience periods of no service, low pressure and discolored water. A Boil Water Advisory means any water that will be used for cleaning, human or pet consumption should be boiled and cooled first. Refrain from swallowing water when showering or bathing. 12/28/24 11AM UPDATE: The Boil Water Advisory has been LIFTED and water is safe for all normal activities. The following measures are strongly encouraged at this time:
• Run your water faucets for 3-5 minutes to flush your service connection and interior plumbing with water from the service main.
• Empty and clean your automatic ice makers and water chillers.
• Drain and refill your hot water heater if the temperature is set below 113 degrees Fahrenheit.
• Service connections with a water softener/cartridge filters should be run through a regeneration cycle or other procedures recommended by the manufacturer.

12/27/24 12PM UPDATE: Boil Water Advisory remains in effect through at least tomorrow. As mentioned, repairs were made. Your water pressure should have returned to normal levels. This morning, samples are being taking from strategic locations throughout town as per guidelines. They are then analyzed by the Townships Water Department and submitted to the NJDEP for approval. The process will take us into tomorrow afternoon. Continue to boil water used for cleaning, human or pet consumption. Refrain from swallowing water when showering or bathing. Run cold faucet for 3 - 5 minutes if you experience discolored water. Next update will be Saturday afternoon.
12/26/24 7PM UPDATE: Boil Water Advisory remains in effect. DPW crews were able to make repairs and the main is fully functional. Water pressure should be normal. Tonight DPW will be performing hydrant flushing to move water along the system. If you experience discolored water, run cold water for 3 - 5 minutes. Tomorrow morning testing will be done at various locations throughout Verona under the supervision of the Townships licensed water environmental consultants. Results should be available during the day Saturday. Boil Water Advisory remains until further notice. Next update will Friday at noon.
12/26/24 4PM UPDATE: Boil Water Advisory remains in effect. This Advisory will remain in place over the next 48 hours or longer. A break to a 12 inch main occurred and repairs are underway. The Verona Office of Emergency Management continues to monitor the situation in conjunction with the Townships licensed water environmental consultants. Once repairs are completed, water will be tested at numerous locations throughout town to ensure NJDEP standards are met before lifting the advisory. Verona Fire Department have contingency plans in effect for fire fighting operations in case of low pressure. Essex County Office of Emergency Management have been notified and are assisting. Next update will be at 7PM tonight.
The Township of Verona is providing notification that a water main break has occurred at Franklin St and Brookside Terr in the Township of Verona which has caused customers within our service area to be without water or experience a significant loss of pressure. A potential or actual threat to the quality of water being provided to you currently exists. As a precaution, we are implementing a system wide boil water advisory until testing of the water supply is deemed satisfactory.
What should I do? What does this mean?
Effective immediately and until further notice, customers within the impacted service area of the Township of Verona are instructed to bring tap water to a rolling boil for one minute and allow the tap water to cool before using, or use bottled water. Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking; preparing foods; mixing baby formula, food, juices or drinks; washing vegetables and fruit; cooking; making ice; brushing teeth; and washing dishes until further notice. Boiling kills bacteria and other organisms in the water.

Please continue to boil your water or use bottled water until you are notified that the water quality is satisfactory. This advisory will remain in effect until repairs are completed and testing shows the water quality to be safe.
